The American researchers have acknowledged that the rooms which have high pressure and full of oxygen may have positive results for the autism patients. After Forty hours from putting the patients in these rooms, they show great improvements at the way in dealing with others and their desire to look at their speakers.
This kind of treatment is known for its effectiveness in the cases of neurological diseases such as foetal alcohol syndrome and cerebral palsy.
Some studies handled the treatment of the autism patients but they did not do the required comparison which make questions be raised about the placebo effect.
In the last study which was occurred by six centers in the USA under the leadership of Dr Dan Rossignol from the International Child Development Resource Centre, sixty two of autism patients have been taken this treatment and their ages are from two to seven for forty hours over a month. The doctors found that 30% from these patients show a great improvements in their cases in comparison between them with the 8% who do not take this treatment. 80% from the group which take this treatment shows improvement in comparison with the 38% which do not take this treatment. Some of the explanations for this improvement that oxygen can reduce the inflammation and improve the flow of oxygen through the cells of brain. But the study does not confirm whether the affect of oxygen therapy will be permanent or temporary.
Dr Rossignol said that the next stage of the search will be for determining the patients who can respond to this expensive treatment. He added that those patients could be suffer from inflammation than others so it is good to know the period which the treatment needs. He refers that this way of treatment is popular in the USA, because families there can buy the oxygen rooms for their patients despite of its expensive cost.
